Mederma: Does Mederma work?

Mederma Review

The Mederma line of scar care products, including the Mederma Scar Cream, is one of the most recognizable scar treatments in the United States. This line of products is produced by Merz Pharmaceuticals. The Mederma Scar Cream and gels are sold at a number of nationally recognized retailers.

While Mederma is certainly one of the most inexpensive and well-known scar creams on the market, our review staff believes that it is not the best product available for reducing the appearance of both old and new scars. This is because Mederma uses onion extract in their formulas. This ingredient was shown to have the same effect as using petroleum jelly.

Based on widely published evidence, our review staff believes that silicone based scar gels are the most effective scar treatments. Silicone not only helps protect the scar from additional damage, but it also helps the scar retain moisture from the surrounding areas of healthy skin. There are even some theories that the static electricity caused by using silicone will help diminish the appearance of the scar. The bottom line is that using silicone based scar treatments will help improve the appearance of one's scar(s)

Click on the banner located at the bottom of this page to learn which scar treatments made it to the top of our list. While the Mederma Scar Cream did make our list of best scar treatments, it was not the best overall rate scar cream or gel based not only on the primary ingredient used in Mederma, but also because our staff found a fair amount of negative Mederma Reviews online.

While using Mederma may in fact help reduce the appearance of you scar, our staff believes that it is a smarter and more proactive decision to spend a little more money up front for a scar treatment that will produce dramatic results rather than risk wasting one's money. Read the following Mederma Reviews in order to realize that Mederma may not be your best scar treatment option.

"I know this product may work for some people but it didn't work at all for me. I followed the directions and used the gel 3 times on scar on my forehead. The gel has left a very dark spot in the middle of my forehead so i had to stop using it. It did't reduce my scar appearance at all and now not only do i still have a very horrible scar, now i have a very ugly dark spot in the center of my forehead that i can't get rid of. My advice is don't waste your money on this crap it was a total waste of money and now i have two scars thanks to using this crap."

Science journals have reported on Mederma compared to petroleum jelly for treating scars, and they concluded there was no difference.

"I bought this product after hearing friends rave about it. Well, I have been using it for a while now and dislike it for the following reasons:

- The perfume in this product irritated my fresh scars. I was sore and itchy. (There were no open wounds)

- The gel dries to a film which rubs off your skin and can best be described as looking like dandruff everywhere you had applied it. This may not be a big deal if you only apply a small amount to a small scar, but take larger scars, and it is a mess.

This was my first time using this product and it will be my last. For the price, I am not
impressed!
