While this product does contain silicone, one of the few ingredients shown through clinical studies to be effective for scar reduction, this may not be the ideal scar treatment product. This is due to the many other ingredients in the product that can dilute the silicone, making it less effective and the vitamin E it contains, which has been shown to be detrimental to scar treatment.
When it comes to substances that will diminish the color, raised appearance and thickness of scars, there are only a few things that have been shown through many studies to be effective. One of them is silicone. Numerous studies have found that anywhere from 60-100% of cases were improved when silicone was applied to the scarred area. However, studies have also found that “vitamin E did not help in scar reduction but was associated with an increased incidence of contact dermatitis.” The makers claim that No More Scars effectiveness comes from their 21 ingredients, including herbs. Studies have shown that herbs may be beneficial for diminishing the appearance of scars, though there is no evidence to support these claims. And when they are combined with the silicone, they actually diminish the effectiveness of the silicone.
