Prefer On: Does Prefer On work?

Prefer On Review

Although PreferOn is a well marketed product from the makers of the HeadOn brand of pain reliever, it may not be the most effective scar treatment available due to the fact that it uses onion along with silicone and other ingredients which dilutes the silicone which can cause the formula to not be as effective as a 100% silicone formula.  This review will examine the strengths and weaknesses of PerferOn Intensive Scar Management and offer alternative in effective scar reduction treatments.

Created by Miralus Healthcare, PreferOn claims to soften and smooth the skin in order to reduce the appearance of scars.  Like other Miralus products such as HeadOn and ActivOn, PreferOn comes in an easy to use stick that is applied by simply rubbing in on any visible scars.  PreferOn uses an extract from the onion bulb as its active ingredient to diminish the visibility of scars.  While there is some debate regarding the effectiveness of onion bulb extract, also referred to as allium cepa, it has found its way into the formula of numerous scar treatments.

PreferOn’s Strengths

  • Can be applied to all types of scar, even stretch marks
  • Easy to use applicator
  • Relatively inexpensive

PreferOn’s Weaknesses

  • Does not contain 100% silicone ingredients
  • PreferOn website offers very little information
  • Many users report no effect

PreferOn’s Ingredients
Propylene Glycol, Water, Sodium Stearate, PEG 8 silicone, Diazolidinyl Urea, Triethanolamine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Steareth 21, Tetrasodium EDTA, Allium Cepa (Onion) Bulb Extract, Iodopropyl Butylcarbamate
Size: 0.35 oz

The Verdict on PreferOn
prefer onPreferOn’s popularity is the result of effective marketing and name recognition.  As a scar treatment, however, it has yet to prove itself.  Some people have reported that PreferOn does help to smooth out raise keloid scars which results in them becoming slightly less visible.  Unfortunately, there have been no clinical studies that have shown onion bulb extract to be an effective means at reducing the appearance of scars.  Currently, one of the most promising methods of scar treatment is the use of silicone gels which research suggests work to diminish scar visibility by multiple means.  If you would like to see how PreferOn ranked among other scar treatments we reviewed, please take a look at our review grid below.
